about

D I A M O N D S T A R is an experiment in time-frequency analysis. Using several Fourier Transforms readings of BPM 37093 (A dwarf star that's 90% composed of diamond) made in 1999 by the scientists at the Xcov 17 observatory (wet.physics.iastate.edu/xcov17/bpm/ft/), I've made a 24 hour recreation of this star's 'music'.

I first became aware of BPM 37093 thanks to the excellent Jim Jarmusch's film, Only Lovers Left Alive. In it, the characters describe it as a "diamond that emits the music of a gigantic gong". This awoke my curiosity and drove me to discover what this celestial body could sound like.

I've interpreted the data thanks to Xcov 17's scientist clear Frequency-Amplitude charting and created an approximation of how BPM 37093 (nicknamed Lucy) should sound at a human audible frequency during 24 hours.

This is a highly speculative work as sound is affected by temperature, air pressure, humidity, etc. Conditions that are imposible in deep space. So I just started from a base 3750 Hz sine wave tone (about the max frequency found in the Xcov 17's charts) and worked with that, modifying by blocks of sound, without taking into account the variables found in any other natural sound phenomenon.

This is not an A Dirac Sea's release. It's more an individual experiment and a tribute to the work of these men.

A single track version of the 24 hour sound recreation will be made available at a later time.

Thanks to:

The scientists at the Xcov 17 observatory: Steve Kawaler, Darragh O'Donoghue and Scot Kleinman.

Jim Jarmusch for introducing BPM 37093 into pop culture making a reference of it in his amazing movie Only Lovers Left Alive.
